My approach
My experience working as a community organizer to nonprofit director for over 10 years taught me invaluable lessons on how to build, develop sustainable organizations and programs that work powerfully and effectively. One of the most important lesson of organizing is that our power is in relationships. Understanding the state and depth of our connections with others is fundamental in knowing what is our collective capacity to make change happen.
Change is constant. Yet, embracing change is not always easy. As a consultant working with arts and values driven nonprofit organizations, I often start with listening to understand what changes or challenges my client is facing. From there, we clarify what are essential needs and I intentionally share how I can apply my unique skillset and expertise to your organization.
My ultimate goal is for my nonprofit clients to embrace whatever kind of change is before you and empower your teams to make effective decisions to bringing your mission to life and find joy in the process.
My approach to Board Development and Training is informed by three perspectives. First, my approach greatly informed by my prior service on the Board of Directors for Good Business Colorado (501c3), Good Business Colorado Association (501c6) and Center for Health Progress (501c3). For each board, I served in different roles and learned the importance of effective mission driven fiduciary leadership. The second perspective informing my approach is from my professional experiences as a nonprofit director in positions of executive leadership. Bringing the perspective of am executive leader allows me to understand what kinds of information boards need to leverage their strengths and address gaps. Additionally, my nonprofit leadership experience often supports me in asking strategic questions to both the Board and Executive leaders so they can work more effectively and in greater alignment. The third perspective comes from my 5+ years of experience as a consultant where I have worked with a wide range of nonprofit clients to understand governance basics and fiduciary, clarify roles between Boards and Staff, find mission re-alignment, strengthen decision making, and develop nimble and responsive board infrastructures. My clients often share how my well rounded perspectives are a unique asset when working on Board Development goals.
My approach to Program Development starts with understanding how current efforts and activities led by your organization are first aligned with your organizational mission and furthering your mission impact. From there, I ask questions to assess what is the current capacity of your program and to understand what goals are your aspiring to accomplish. I also like to know what professional development, systems and resources exists for you and your team to be successful in implementing the program. Often times, program development will include reflective and evaluation conversations before I work with you and your team to develop new goals, plans, and timelines. What is most needed will determine what our work together will be and I do my best to articulate an agile process when creating proposals. My main role with program development is to be a resource to you and program team, while you all continue to drive decisions, planning, and day-to-day activities for the communities and partners you engage and/or serve.
